saying “i do” again!

My husband and I spent the last few months of 2012 not only working on other people’s weddings but also excitedly planning a vow renewal ceremony for our own first wedding anniversary.  It was almost as exciting as planning our wedding day last year, especially since we were the only ones to know about it.  It felt almost like we were eloping, only we knew we weren’t going to be offending anyone since we’d already been married!

We were married on 5 November 2011 in front of over 100 family members and friends.  It was a beautiful day and we wouldn’t have changed it for anything, but because we had been so caught up in the details and making everything perfect, and because we both experienced a bad case of nerves, we felt like we didn’t focus as much as we would have liked on the true meaning of the day.  The whole “getting married” bit can become a bit lost in the course of planning a big wedding, as bizarre as that sounds!

So we decided for our first anniversary we would travel somewhere we had never been before, where we knew no one, and renew our vows.  No decorations to think about, no schedule to worry about – just us affirming the promise that we made to each other a year ago and being able to take it all in.

We chose Tasmania, somewhere we had wanted to visit for some time, and planned to spend our first anniversary in Hobart.  We were slightly nervous about the weather but we ended up having the most beautiful day, sunny and warm.  Our very intimate ceremony close to the Royal Botanical Gardens was followed by a mini picnic, a short trip to the coast, drinks at Sidecar and a private dinner at the Henry Jones Art Hotel.  It was a really special day, giving us the chance to focus on our love and the commitment we chose to make to one another and to really celebrate and appreciate it.

We had the most wonderful people to help us bring our perfect day together.  Leanne Orr was the perfect celebrant – she really made our ceremony meaningful, incorporating lots of personal details and a reading that had been featured in our original wedding ceremony.  Our photographer was the incredible Jonathan Wherrett.  As soon as we saw his work we fell in love with it and when I spoke with him over the phone I knew that he was going to help to make our day really special which he did, helping us find the perfect ceremony location, running us around town and arranging post ceremony drinks and nibbles for us.  Thank you Leanne and Jonathan for making our day so perfect!

Hobart will now always hold a special place in our hearts.
